A Guide to Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown with Kids Part 2

If you missed yesterday's post about our trip to Colonial Williamsburg, be sure to read it here first. It's chock full of photos to inspire your visit to this beautiful part of our country! A Guide to Colonial Williamsburg with Kids, Part 1 On Day 2 of our trip, we took a bit of a different approach.   My good friend Marcia lives in the Richmond area, so she wanted to bring her twin daughters over to tour Williamsburg with us.  We also took a vacation with them to Niagara Falls, so … [Read more...]

A Guide to Colonial Williamsburg with Kids Part 1

The older I get, the more of a history geek I become. I was always kind of a history lover, but not to the extent that I am now. Give me a re-enactment of a historical village any day over a modern day city. My love of Outlander might have something to do with it, but mainly it's just in my blood. Historical places fascinate me, especially anything to do with the 18th and 19th century. For this reason, Colonial Williamsburg has been on my bucket list to visit for many years, and FINALLY we … [Read more...]

So Close to Amazing

I come by it honestly. My artistic abilities didn't just materialize out of thin air. Both of my parents are artsy and/or craftsy. When my dad was in high school he painted an entire backdrop for a school talent show that made the audience literally gasp when they saw it. It was painted to look like a funeral parlor with a steep staircase and a creepy owl in a tree outside the window. He also starred in the play, so I guess you could say he was theatrical as well as artistic. (and … [Read more...]

How to add a Laundry Chute to your home

When we remodeled our attic space one of the key elements I wanted to install was a laundry chute from the second floor to the laundry room. We had one at our old house and I have missed it terribly, especially now that Garrett is older and his clothes are getting bigger by the second. We lucked out in a major way because this empty space beside the attic door turned out to line up perfectly over the corner of our laundry room ceiling. I had been eyeing this spot for a while, doing … [Read more...]

Mickey's Not So Spooky Halloween is a fun multi-night event at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom where you and your family get to Trick or Treat at Disney World, while meeting special characters and hopping on rides a lot faster than on your typical day to the parks. Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is a special ticket event and takes place on select nights from August through October. We attended many years ago with Garrett, and I would love to go back and do it again with … [Read more...]

Our Great American Eclipse Recap

The Great American Eclipse happened yesterday. It was awesome. At first I was skeptical. When my dad asked if we wanted to go see the eclipse in totality, I didn't really understand what that meant. All the eclipse maps put Birmingham at about 98% totality. Wouldn't 98% be just as good as 100%? I mean, it is THE SUN, so it's pretty much visible from the entire Western hemisphere, right? Turns out that nope, 98% is not AT ALL like 100% totality. Not even close. Every single thing I … [Read more...]

Our sweet Caroline is turning TWO this week. Can you even believe it?? It's amazing to think that it's been two whole years since she came along and took our lives on a sharp right-hand turn out of nowhere. 20 Summer Road Trip Essentials for Kids

Who else is planning a summer road trip with kids?  Summer is nearly over, which means you better hit the road quick if you want to avoid those unexcused absences. If you want to try to kick it old school style and have a technology-free road trip then you are gonna need to get creative. Tales of Painted Basement Ceilings and Pole Dancing Woes

When we sold our old house, one of the things we were most sad to leave behind was our finished basement.  We put in so much work to make that basement beautiful, so it really hurt to give it up. The movie room with all that amazing molding and those gorgeous cabinets?? I was sad to leave them behind. Click here to tour the basement in the old house. BUT... our new house had a large unfinished basement space that we knew we could make functional for our family. We knew going into this … [Read more...]
