DIY a Vintage Flag with Ribbon and a Handkerchief

A few years back I found this set of vintage baby crib springs at a local junk shop.  It was chipped and rusty and moldy on one corner, but I loved the harlequin shape of the springs. At the same time I also saw an old weathered mantelpiece that called my name in a major way. I had NO idea how I would use either item, but I knew that I loved them both and would eventually find a way to work them into my house.  My husband gave me some major side-eye … [Read more...]

DIY Ribbon and Lace Nursery Mobile

I’ve known all along that I wanted to DIY a pretty mobile for baby girl’s nursery, but I never knew exactly what I wanted until I walked into a local consignment store (Easy Street Resale) and saw these beautiful, but oh-so-simple ribbon and lace mobiles hanging from the ceiling.  Theirs were for decoration only and not for sale, so I decided to create my own version at home with a few simple (and cheap!) items. Last week was a super productive week in the nursery thanks to my friend Dusty … [Read more...]

DIY Burlap and Slate Picture Frame on Reclaimed Wood

My Grandparent's home stayed in our family after they passed away, so when my uncle decided to renovate it he gave me a bunch of the old wooden trim from around the doors and windows.  I even scored the kitchen door threshold, which holds decades of dusty memories and family history within it's grooves.  I needed a way to preserve this cherished wood and display it in my own home today, so I came up with this unique photo "frame" idea.  This is one of the most special projects I've ever created, … [Read more...]

How to turn your home into a personalized Christmas ornament

Many Pinterest moons ago I spied with my little eye this personalized Christmas ornament that was an exact replica of a house.  The link took me to an etsy shop that listed the ornaments for about $1,000 a pop, and stated that she was booked out until 2057 or sometime in the distant future.  I was so sad, because that personalized ornament was just about the most perfect gift for my sister (and myself) that I had ever seen. Of course now that I check etsy I see that there are plenty of options … [Read more...]

Minecraft Magnets: Make your Own (Free Printable)

While browsing the bookstore together recently, my five year old son suddenly spied an entire display of Minecraft toys from about nine aisles away. He ran over to check it out, and that's when the begging began. "Mama! Can I get this? And this? And this? And..." I stopped him in his tracks. I looked at the prices and my eyes nearly bugged out of my head. There was NO way I was going to pay $30 bucks for a sheet of magnets that I knew I could make myself. I call that getting tricked by a … [Read more...]

Constructing An Epic Fairy Garden

Anyone else out there have a fondness for fairy gardens?  The Epic movie was one of my very favorite cartoons released this year.  Every time I wander around our yard with Garrett we point out little humps of moss or gnarled knots in trees that could hide a fairy lurking underneath.  I love the imagination behind it all, and the magical wonder of the possibility of a tiny world that exists right underneath our noses.  Every time a bug splats our window Garrett asks if it was a Boggan.  If you … [Read more...]

Creating a Thanksgiving Tradition for the Kids

Hard to believe that Thanksgiving is almost here again, even though I type this on Fall Back Sunday with the sun sinking low behind the orange leaves on the trees outside. I am struck by how different this year has been for us with Garrett in Kindergarten at a public school.   For four years he attended a sweet little church preschool where they were constantly having events to celebrate the seasons.  This year it’s different.  There are not any school parties or trunk-or-treats.  There is not … [Read more...]

Thrift Store Makeover: Vintage Student Desk Edition

I keep seeing these vintage student desks popping up all over thrift stores and antique malls these days.  Prices vary, depending on the condition and age of the piece, but we picked up this cute little metal guy for $30.00.  I was actually shopping with my parents when my dad spotted the desk.  He started reminiscing about his school days spent studying in a metal desk exactly like this one, so I’m going to guess the age to be a mid century piece, since that is when my dad would have been in … [Read more...]
