The Attic Book Nook

When I was a little girl I was a voracious reader. I read every book that I could get my hands on, staying up late into the night curled up under the covers with a flashlight shining between the pages.  These days I still curl up under the covers with a book, but the light shines out from the Kindle app on my iPhone screen, much to my husband's dismay. I'm happy to say that my love of books has been handed down to the next generation.  My 9 year old, Garrett, devours books as much as I ever … [Read more...]

A Light {or seven} in the Attic

The electrician just left my house and we have LIGHTS in the attic! Woot! Check 'em out! You guys have already seen these copper sconces in the last blog post, but here it is again, minus my fingers holding it up and pretending it was actually installed.  There are three of these copper wall sconces- two on either side of where the desk area will be and one in the reading nook to shine some light in there.  I had originally planned on getting the 12" sconces for this … [Read more...]

Attic Updates: Paint and Cubby Storage Progress

The last time you saw the attic-turned-office/playroom it looked a lot like Noah's Ark minus the stink.  Today, I'm SO excited to share the update with the latest progress that's been made in the past week! First off, the cubby-making is underway. Heath will be building in all the custom shelving at his workshop, but he brought one over to see how it will look.  Here is one of the cubbies pre-paint job:  Heads up: affiliate links ahead, y'all. He is … [Read more...]

All I Want for Christmas is Some New Shiplap

The last few weeks have been a flurry of activity around our house, with our attic remodel in full swing. Our awesome builder is Heath Pender of HP Painting and Remodeling from Hoover. He and his son, Nathan, have been knocking it out of the park up there!  At the end of two weeks, and SO much progress has been made on the room. It is moving right along, and I could not be happier with the way it's shaping up.  I've learned a few things along the way and thought I'd … [Read more...]

You’re invited to a DIH Virtual Party!

Some of my blog buddies are getting together next week for a fun DIH party. What is a DIH party, you ask?  Well, if DIY means Do-it-Yourself, DIH means Do-it-HERself! Did y'all know that Home Depot hosts fun workshops that teach women how to use power tools and make really cool things while doing it?  Click here to check them out! I learned about this a few years ago, and thought it was such a great idea. I've been wielding my dad's circular saw since I was knee-high to a grasshopper, … [Read more...]

Five Things Your Garbage Disposal Wants You to Know

Back in the early 2000's when I was an apartment dweller I had a garbage disposal in my sink.  I will admit it was kinda scary when a spoon accidentally dropped down inside of it but I LOVED having it as an option for quick and easy cleanups. I've missed that old disposal over the years. After I moved out of the apartment I started buying houses, and our past three houses have been on a septic tank. I have always been told that garbage disposals are not compatible with a septic tank, so I … [Read more...]

The Caroline TV Chest

When we moved in this house, we temporarily put our tv on top of an end table that my husband built with intentions of having built-in bookcases added around the fireplace.  Over a year later, and the "temporary" setup was still going strong with no end in sight. How pitiful is that?  Over a year later, and my tv was still sitting on top of that same end table (and I'm ashamed to admit it wasn't even anchored to the wall). The tv is bigger than the table. There were wires hanging … [Read more...]

The Collected Foyer

Our foyer, living room, kitchen and dining room (which is my home office) is one big open space in this house.  Wide open living is great, unless you have a toddler who is faster than a speeding bullet zipping around snatching and grabbing every thing she can get her hands on. Here is a picture of our open living area BEFORE she started walking (the coffee table has since been replaced by an overstuffed ottoman that she can't chew on). If you follow me on Instagram you probably saw … [Read more...]
