Get back to your roots!

kitchen cabinets

Not sure if you noticed in my latest kitchen post but I have this beautiful burled wood basket on my countertop that is carved out of a solid piece of wood.

I’ve been using this basket as a place to keep my bread for years. I bought mine at Homegoods for around $40, but today they are being sold at One Kings Lane for around $40. 🙂 Glad to see I didn’t overpay.

There are all sorts of beautiful root platters and root bowls and root baskets that are all pretty much one of a kind since you know… all tree roots are pretty much one of a kind. It has all sorts of pretty lumps and bumps and crevices in it.

For what it’s worth, I have seen these sold in souvenir shops in and around Vancouver for well over $100 each.

The downside to these root bowls is that they crack easily. The day after I bought my bowl I was sitting in the living room and heard a loud “POP”. I went in the kitchen to discover that my basket had this huge crack right in the side of it. Talk about being bummed out!

But, I just keep the cracked side up against the wall and nobody has ever noticed. When I use it for serving at parties I put a placemat or cloth napkin inside to cover the crack. Here it is serving bread at my Watkins Open House a few years ago. I also have a large platter that is shaped like a turkey foot that you can barely see up top beside the flower arrangement. Great for Thanksgiving!

You can see the basket again nestled into my Mardi Gras party setup here:

I haven’t seen these at Homegoods in a long while (and I look ever time I step foot in the store) so if you want one of these unique pieces now is the time! The sales end fast on One Kings Lane so don’t wait around thinking you’ll get it later. It won’t be there. This particular sale ends on June 29th at 11 am Eastern time.

If you haven’t heard about OKL, it’s a daily deal site similar to the Foundary or Zulily that features a variety discounted home decor items every few days. I have a little bit of an addiction to these types of websites. So beware. You might like what you see just a little bit too much.
