The Basement Man-Office is Complete

Remember our ugly basement makeover? Well, I'm finally getting around to sharing the basement decor with you today. This room has been completed for a long while now, but I'm a bad blogger who doesn't get around to posting things in a timely manner. Forgive me? This is the room we created for my husband's office space on the days he works from home. We found this awesome Ralph Lauren desk on sale at Homegoods a while back while searching for a new dining room table. I bought it … [Read more...]

Tales of Painted Basement Ceilings and Pole Dancing Woes

When we sold our old house, one of the things we were most sad to leave behind was our finished basement.  We put in so much work to make that basement beautiful, so it really hurt to give it up. The movie room with all that amazing molding and those gorgeous cabinets?? I was sad to leave them behind. Click here to tour the basement in the old house. BUT... our new house had a large unfinished basement space that we knew we could make functional for our family. We knew going into this … [Read more...]

DIY Painted Serving Bar: The Big Reveal

Yesterday I talked about how I chose my Glidden  paint colors for a fun new DIY painted furniture project using the My Colortopia and Color 101 website, and today is the big reveal!  Remember this 1980’s chest o’ drawers?  Well speaking of drawers, hold onto yours (name that movie)… Eeeeeee!!  I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!!!!  Our basement is loving it too.  This big blank beige wall just got soooo much cooler.  I cannot believe what a difference a little paint … [Read more...]

How to Paint Stripes on Furniture with Glidden Paint

Today I’m tackling one of the biggest questions I get asked as a DIY blogger, along with a fun painted furniture project. Question: How do I choose a paint color for DIY furniture painting projects? Answer: It depends. I have painted SO many different pieces of furniture over the years, and I learn a little bit more each time I create a new project.  I tend to lean toward the "muddy" paint colors-- and by that I mean the ones that have a lot of grey or brown added to them to tone them … [Read more...]

The Most Amazing Scrapbooking Room You Ever Did See.

As promised in yesterday’s vintage student desk makeover tutorial, I’m back today with a tour of The Most Amazing Scrapbooking Room You Ever Did See. Here is the new home of the little chevron desk… my mom’s craft room that we recently made over: My mom is a lover of all things crafty.  Y’all know I had to get all this creativity from somewhere, right?  Well, my mother gave me a healthy dose of it for sure.  Ever since I can remember, she has been sculpting or painting or hot-gluing something … [Read more...]

Adventures in Craigslisting

Here’s a confession. My husband has a bit of a Craigslist addiction.   I never know, from one day to the next, what new and unusual item I will find sitting in my basement when I walk downstairs.  From vintage Coke machines to rusty old signs that say “Eat Steak”, it’s a guessing game what all treasures I might find down there.  One time it was a Ms. Pacman arcade, another time a jukebox.  Before the basement remodel was completed he bought movie theater seating from the Alabama Theatre … [Read more...]

Painted basement Steps with Board and batten

Today I’m pulling one from the archives to show you guys how we transformed our basement staircase with a little bit of paint and some board and batten.  I originally shared this basement renovation project over on the DIY Showoff’s blog back in 2011. When we moved into this house, our basement staircase looked like something from a maximum security prison.    Here is what the steps looked like when you were headed down into the dungeon:   Once you got down there, the scene did not … [Read more...]

Because matboard is boring; Part II

After a year of sitting buck naked, the walls in the man cave are finally getting some adornment this weekend thanks to a 50% off sale at Hobby Lobby and a little bit of ingenuity on my part. I have had the poster prints for a long time, but it’s taken me a while to find a frame that I liked enough to pull the trigger on buying.  I found these rustic ones at Hobby Lobby on sale, so they came home with me.   These Shutterfly poster prints come in a 20x30 size, but the only frames I could find had … [Read more...]

Houston, we have countertops.

My awesome, incredible, wonderful and very much appreciated husband got something marked off the to-do list that I'm very excited to share with y'all! Countertops are IN in the basement! Now when you walk downstairs instead of seeing this:You see this:Much better, huh?! And the really cool part--He got the local granite folks to give him an incredible deal on this stuff. It cost LESS than what Lowes was quoting us for laminate countertops. No joke. He chose this beautiful piece of coppery … [Read more...]

My Birmingham and My Basement

Last weekend we took Garrett to see the Discover the Dinosaurs exhibit in downtown Birmingham. We also took a gander around the Home and Garden show at the BJCC. It was pouring rain when we left so we had to hold bags over our heads and make a run for it. Then we had to give Garrett the speech about how he should never, ever put a bag over his head again. Do as I say, not as I do and all that. Those tidbits are completely irrelevant to this story, but it makes a good segway to let you know why … [Read more...]
