Peanut Butter Cornflake Coconut Bars + Gooey Video Tutorial

I've been making these peanut butter coconut squares since I was a little girl, which might explain why turned out so unskinny as an adult. What can I say? I'm a child of the 70's. Ahhh, the 1970's. Those glorious years when moms were not scared of red food dye or HFCS or cigarette smoke or letting their toddlers ride with their faces pressed against the glass of a station wagon rear window. Our KoolAid pitchers were filled with cups of toxic sugar and our AquaNet ate holes in the Ozone … [Read more...]

Food Photography Styling Tips from the Pros

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending a workshop here in Birmingham that taught us all about prop styling for food photography. Jessica from Spiffy Eats hosted it along with two ladies who work as food stylists for Time, Inc. All day long Rishon Hanners and Audrey Davis style food photos for magazines like Southern Living and Cooking Light. It was a joy to watch them work together to set up the perfect shot. They made it look SO easy, when in fact it takes a lot of skill … [Read more...]

Plan your Summer Cookout {with essential oils}

Did you guys know you can use essential oils in recipes? I had no idea you could cook with essential oils until I discovered Young Living a few years back. I always assumed they were just for the smell-good factor but there is so much more to them than that. Here is the biggest advantage to cooking with essential oils- they give your food a flavor kick that regular extracts cannot provide. These little bottles contain some potent stuff. Also, have you ever used a bottle of expired extract … [Read more...]

The Gingerbread Tradition {and a Free Printable}

I will admit that I have never made a gingerbread house from scratch.   Wait... that's not true. I once made a giant haunted gingerbread mansion for Halloween but it was more like chocolate cookie than gingerbread so I'm not sure if that counts. It had Cheez-it roof tiles and candy corn turrets and I actually mixed and baked each piece of the house in my own oven so I'm calling that a yes. That sucker was a beast to assemble. I made a vow after that to never bake one from … [Read more...]

15 Tempting Thanksgiving Desserts

Ok guys. Less than one week until Thanksgiving. Time to start scanning Pinterest like a madwoman to figure out what we are taking to the potluck. Have you made your game plan yet?  In the past few years, my husband has developed a severe peanut/tree nut allergy, so Thanksgiving is like walking through a land-mine for him. I've been looking around on Pinterest for nut-free Thanksgiving desserts that will not cause him any issues. It's way harder than it looks because nuts and … [Read more...]

Apple Recipes to Try this Fall

Two years ago I was sitting in the middle of an apple orchard in Wisconsin, u-picking apples straight off the trees and reveling in the cool, crisp air.  I LOVED our Wisconsin vacation so much, and now every time I think of apple recipes, I'm reminded of that fun 10th anniversary vacation. I think about that vacation so very often because it was such a turning point in our lives. Do you ever have moments that you can pinpoint as THE moment when something changed in your life? Simple School Lunches for Normal People

School is in full swing here, which means I have spent a lot of minutes staring blankly into my pantry with a puzzled look on my face, trying to figure out what I should be putting in my son's lunchbox. If I'm being honest, with everything that's been going on in our lives lately, I filled up his lunchroom credit card with cash and let him buy anything he wants from the cafeteria, which is usually a cheeseburger, Doritos and an ice cream sandwich.  :/ Not good. Finally I decided to … [Read more...]

Caroline turned one last week, and we celebrated this weekend with a berry sweet strawberry themed birthday party!  It's so hard to believe that my little baby girl is already ONE. My goodness, time needs to slow down. I'll have a source list at the end of this post in case you are looking for any of these strawberry themed birthday decorations. I setup a little gift table in front of the fireplace, and decorated it with strawberries and flowers. I scored that sweet little green … [Read more...]
