Tiptoe Through the Tulips at American Village in Montevallo

If you're looking for a fun southern road trip idea this weekend, come tiptoe through the tulips in Montevallo, Alabama. The 2nd annual Festival of Tulips begins this Saturday and it is truly a sight to behold. There are THOUSANDS of tulip bulbs planted in a huge field that you can go dig up and take home to enjoy for years to come. My mom and I went to the tulip festival last year and I was able to take a bunch of pictures. Check out how beautiful they are! If you've never … [Read more...]

Things to do on a Family Friendly Mardi Gras Vacation

When you think of Mardi Gras, you probably think of loose women baring their boobies on Bourbon Street to get some strands of beads. But did you know that there is also a HUGE Mardi Gras celebration in Mobile, Alabama every year that is way more tame, just as fun and totally family friendly? Start planning your next vacation with the kids, because after you read this post you're gonna want to start packing. Here's a fun fact: New Orleans likes to take all the credit, but the very first … [Read more...]

It’s Snowing in the Pines

This was my house on Friday looking like the opening scene of a freaking Hallmark movie. If you had told me on THURSDAY that the skies would drop nearly 6 inches of snow on my house the next day, I would have laughed and told you to get outta here. Because this? This stuff doesn't happen in Alabama. Snow before Christmas in Alabama?? Nope. It doesn't happen. Except that it did. … [Read more...]

The Sunflower Field

I've driven down a lot of Alabama back roads in my lifetime, but up until this point, none of them were quite as memorable as the one I drove down yesterday.  It was a perfect day for a mini-road trip.  The sky was a brilliant blue.  The clouds were puffy and white. We tossed our sunscreen and snacks in the car and headed off with the kids on a summertime adventure. We left our house around mid-morning and trusted Siri to get us to our destination. … [Read more...]

Things to do in Alabama: Winter Bucket List

Alabama is known for many things: Gulf coast beaches, winning football teams, rolling fields of cotton, and some of the best bass fishing in the whole country.  I am born and raised in the great state of Alabama, and I've spent almost 40 years driving the backroads looking for the best things to do. These days I try to find things that are fun for my kids, too.  On this first day of winter, it's time to get out there and appreciate our state’s amazing scenery and take … [Read more...]

FINDING SOUTHERN ROMANCE; The Rest Of The Story

I believe that every home has a story to tell, but especially the Old Ones.  Those 100+ year old homes that have seen multiple generations of folks pass through the halls and swing on the front porch. Imagine if those walls could talk.  What would they say? Mobile, Alabama has it’s fair share of these matriarchal mansions, standing proudly under the dappled shade of the tall live oak trees. Over the decades, some of these beauties have been neglected and fallen into disrepair.  But then there … [Read more...]

2015 Parade of Homes is Here!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! At least for decorophiles like me, anyway. The Birmingham Parade of Homes starts this weekend, which means I can snoop around perfectly appointed houses and get tons of decorating ideas without having to bring a bottle of wine or be very sociable.  All Parade homes are open to the public and totally FREE to tour. House-hopping around the Parade is the best thing ever.  It’s also starting over Mother’s Day weekend, which makes it a perfect time … [Read more...]

Finding Southern Romance in Mobile, Alabama

When Esther de Wolde decided to checkmark her dream of renovating an old southern home off her bucket list, I bet the idea of sharing her porch railings with a bunch of bloggers from across the continent wasn’t even a blip on her radar. But, that is exactly what happened last week at Esther’s turn-of-the-century home in Mobile, Alabama. Do you like how those of us on the left harnessed our inner Susanne Sugarbakers and lounged right on that railing like we owned it? I had the honor of … [Read more...]
