Harry Potter World Part 2: Hogwarts Here we Come!

Yesterday I told you all about our very special first visit to Universal Studio's Harry Potter World where we got a private audience with Olivander the Wandmaker and explored every inch of Diagon Alley. The next day we went to Islands of Adventure to visit Hogsmeade village and see Hogwarts castle. Unfortunately Universal was SUPER crowded on this day, which meant he had to stand in line just to wave his wand and cast spells on the storefronts. It was totally packed, so I recommend … [Read more...]

Our First Trip to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando

When my son Garrett turned 9, Harry Potter came into my life for the first time. Up until that point, I had never even cracked open a book or seen a single movie in the series. I was in college when the first book came out in 1997 and a newlywed by the time the series ended in 2006, so I totally missed the original phenomenon because I was busy doing, um... other things. But that all changed rapidly when my little muggle boy became obsessed with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. We … [Read more...]

The Night Owl’s Dilemma

All my life I've been a night owl. Even as a kid, I would stay up late reading books or drawing because my creative juices flow fastest at night. During the early morning and late afternoon my brain turns to mush, but during the middle of the night?? I am ON. As I was going through my Google Analytics looking for my top 10 posts of 2017, I noticed something about my blog that I thought was interesting. Most of the posts in my top 50 best posts were actually from 2014. It took me quite a few … [Read more...]

Briskets, Beetles, Kayaks, & Chaos: Our 2017 Christmas Recap

Christmas 2017 is in the books, and I'm coming down from my holiday high by cleaning house, purging 7,000 old photos from my iphone and trying to find a place to squeeze all these new toys in the playroom. Seriously, look at all this stuff. Sanny Claus went a little overboard this year. On Christmas eve we headed over to my in-laws house for brunch, where Garrett got a kayak to take down to their new lake house.  He was over the moon excited about this one, since he spent a lot of hours … [Read more...]

It’s Snowing in the Pines

This was my house on Friday looking like the opening scene of a freaking Hallmark movie. If you had told me on THURSDAY that the skies would drop nearly 6 inches of snow on my house the next day, I would have laughed and told you to get outta here. Because this? This stuff doesn't happen in Alabama. Snow before Christmas in Alabama?? Nope. It doesn't happen. Except that it did. … [Read more...]

Dear Diary: Confessions of an Old-School Blogger

In an effort to get this here blog chugging along again, I have decided to post more updates of the behind-the-scenes parts of our lives like I did in the olden days of blogging. I'm ignoring the rules and going back to my roots. Unskinny Boppy will turn twelve years old this year. TWELVE. That means I have been sharing our lives here for a dozen years, which seems impossible when you consider social media was barely even invented back then. In the early days this blog … [Read more...]

Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More

You guys. It's been over a month since I put my fingers on this keyboard and typed out a blog post. A MONTH. Why are you still here? Wait... IS anyone still here? I'm sure I'm talking to myself in a big empty room at this point.  If you're old and country-fried like me then you know that the title of this blog post is also the title of a song written by a little band called The Allman Brothers. Except it was actually written by Gregg Allman after the other brother, Duane, died in a … [Read more...]

Lone Ranger Themed Birthday Party Decor

This weekend we threw a cowboy roundup for our little Lone Ranger’s seventh birthday party.  The decorations are always my favorite part of a party, and this year was no different.  Since our lives are CrazyTown right now I tried not to let myself go overboard, as I am capable of doing with parties. But, in the end I kinda did go a bit overboard anyway.  Oh well.  Throwing fun parties is one of my most favorite things to do, and my boy only turns seven once, right?   In an effort to keep it … [Read more...]

Share the Love: Free Minecraft valentine Printable at C.R.A.F.T

Hey guys! Today I’m sharing these free printable Minecraft Valentines over at C.R.A.F.T.  (I like to call them “Valenmines”)  Garrett called my mom his “best Minecraft buddy” so the first Valentine’s goes out to her. They build all sorts of worlds on their iPads together when he visits her.  It won’t be long before she gets the hang of the XBox controller and we don’t see them again for the rest of the year. If your kid or mom loves Minecraft as much as mine do, be sure to head over to … [Read more...]
